Thirty Plus Ways to Support Your HSA
 
Following is a brief description of the various events and activities sponsored by the Lower Gwynedd HSA. These activities are accomplished through parent volunteers acting as coordinators and/or by committee:
 
  • After School Workshops:  Coordinates a variety of after school enrichment classes for children taught by parents, teachers, and community volunteers for a specified number of weeks in March.  Past topics have included foreign languages, gymnastics, hip hop dance, robotics, and more.
  • Art Goes to School:  Coordinates volunteers to go into the classrooms to discuss great works of art for a one-week district program during the spring.  Monthly training is provided.
  • Back-to-School:  Coordinates and organizes activities to prepare for school’s opening, including a “Welcome Back” luncheon for teachers and staff, decorating the front of the school, and a “Back to School” family picnic.
  • Baking/Hospitality:  Coordinates volunteers to provide refreshments for HSA meetings, Teacher Appreciation, bake sales  and other events as requested throughout the school year.  Purchases and maintains an inventory of related supplies.
  • Beautification:  Maintains the planters and garden areas around the school and the sign; seasonally decorates exterior front and side entrances.
  • Books Alive:  Plans and coordinates an evening centered on reading stories and poems. This event is held each year in February.
  • Breakfast with Buddy:  Coordinates three mornings in November of a continental-style breakfast for students and parent/special someone.
  • Bulletin Board:  Maintains the HSA bulletin board in the main school lobby.
  • Community Service:  Provides opportunities throughout the year for children to assist in activities that serve the community.
  • Decorating:  Coordinates seasonal interior front lobby window displays and other seasonal interior decorations as needed.
  • Directory:  Organizes, produces and distributes the school directory at the beginning of the school year.
  • District Art Show:  Assists the Art teachers in setting up, monitoring and taking down the district-wide art show held at Wissahickon High School in late spring.
  • Fall Harvest Festival:  Plans and coordinates this Sunday afternoon celebration of the fall season.  Past activities have included scarecrow making, pumpkin and cookie decorating, a hayride, spooky crafts, and a “cake” walk.  This event is held in the fall every other year.
  • Family Bingo Night:  Plans and coordinates an evening of Bingo and snacks for the whole family to enjoy in the late winter.
  • Family Social Night: Plans and coordinates an evening of socializing and snacks for the whole family to enjoy in the early winter. This event is held every other year.
  • Family Fun Night (NEW!): Plans and coordinates an evening of family-oriented activities to enjoy in early winter. This event is held every other year.
  • Field Day:  Assists the Gym teachers by coordinating volunteers to provide a day of fun, school spirit and good sportsmanship at the end of the year.
  • Fifth Grade Activities:  Plans and coordinates the 5th grade year-end events and the fundraisers that support them throughout the year.
  • Fundraising:  Selects (with Executive Board approval) and coordinates major fundraisers that support HSA activities throughout the year.
  • Gym Night:  Plans and coordinates an evening of fun, cooperative-play activities at various “stations” throughout the school.  This event is held in the fall every other year.
  • Learning Center:  Coordinates volunteers for Book Fairs (two per year) and daily assistance in the library.
  • Marathon Club:  Coordinates volunteers to encourage physical activity during recess. Plans and delivers incentive programs to foster enthusiasm for physical activity among students.
  • Memory Book: Distributed at the end of the year, the Memory Book captures the year in pictures for all students.
  • Mini Grants:  Coordinates a committee to evaluate requests from teachers and staff for educational needs and approves monetary allotments.
  • New Parents’ Welcome: Coordinates a get-acquainted event for parents new to LGE.
  • Newsletter – “The Legend”:  Coordinates, produces, and distributes a bi-monthly newsletter that contains input from the HSA, teachers, and the school district.
  • Nutrition: Works with parents and staff to promote healthy nutrition in our school.
  • Publicity:  Notifies the Wissahickon School District Cable TV channel and local newspapers and television stations about upcoming events at Lower Gywnedd Elementary.  Prepares press releases as needed.
  • Pretzel Sales:  Coordinates monthly sales of pretzels to the students.
  • Redemption:Coordinates various programs offered by different businesses to earn money or equipment.  These programs include saving and collecting manufacturer box tops and labels, and urging parents to register our school in the Genuardi’s eScrip program and the Target credit card program.  This is a great opportunity to support your school from home!
  • Room Parents:  Contacts parents to assist teachers as requested.  Typical activities include organizing parties, finding chaperones for field trips, notifying parents of emergency dismissal, scheduling parents to assist with Wednesday mailers, and supporting various HSA activities as needed.
  • Room Parent Coordinators:  Select room parents from among parents who indicate an interest.  Conduct an orientation for room parents to describe typical activities and responsibilities.  Contact room parents in the event of an emergency dismissal to ask them begin notifying parents.
  • School Store:  Coordinates volunteers to open and close the school store twice per month throughout the year.  Maintains the supply of merchandise for the store.
  • Science Night:  Plans and coordinates this night of simple hands-on science experiments and displays.  Stations are staffed by parent volunteers (no science background required!) and invited guests from the community (Wissahickon Watershed, Elmwood Zoo, WHS Robotics Club, etc.).  This event is held in the spring every other year.
  • Skating Party: Plans and coordinates an afternoon of roller skating.
  • Spring Family Picnic:  Plans and coordinates this Friday evening celebration of spring for students and their families.  Past picnics have included children’s games, springtime crafts, a moonbounce, invited musical guests, a dunk tank and more.  This event is held every other year.
  • Teacher/Staff Appreciation:  Coordinates a winter breakfast, year-end luncheon, and other activities throughout the year to show our appreciation to the teachers and staff.
  • Wednesday Mailers:  Coordinates volunteers for counting, stuffing and distributing the Wednesday envelopes each week.
