Lower
Gwynedd Elementary School is a K-5 school located in a suburban
setting between the communities of Ambler and Lower Gwynedd in
Montgomery County Pennsylvania. The
school is located on a campus adjacent to the Wissahickon High School
and across from the Wissahickon Middle School.
Established in 1997, after a redistricting plan that shifted
students from four elementary schools, the grand opening was held on
November 24, 1997. The
Lower Gwynedd community has experienced increased growth in population
and land development. This
development has contributed to the high enrollment of approximately
560 students here at Lower Gwynedd Elementary School. Lower
Gwynedd Elementary School welcomes its diverse community comprised of
various religious, ethnic and socioeconomic groups.
Students from Mattison Avenue Elementary School transition to
Lower Gwynedd Elementary School after 3rd grade.
Lower Gwynedd Elementary School partners with the Mattison
Avenue Elementary School community in order to accommodate the
transition. The
location of Lower Gwynedd Elementary School also makes it convenient
to work with the Wissahickon Middle School to facilitate the 5th
grade transition to middle school. Lower
Gwynedd Elementary School was designed to meet the changes occurring
in our diverse community in terms of both the growth patterns and
educational needs of our students.
The building has 30 rooms to accommodate 600 students and is
equipped with technology. This
includes networked Internet access, telephone systems, monitors and
Internet ready computers in every room.
In addition to the 30 classrooms, the building contains a large group
instruction area, several seminar rooms, music and art rooms, a media
center with a fully networked computer lab and library.
The multi-purpose room serves as a cafeteria, physical
education facility, and auditorium.
The main office area includes a reception area, principal's
office, guidance office with instructional area, conference room, and
nurse's suite. Outside
facilities include practice fields, handicap-accessible playground and
instructional gardens. With
a combined professional and support staff of over 70 individuals, the
school delivers a comprehensive curriculum in language arts, math,
science, social studies, art, music, physical education, health,
technology education, library skills, and computer education.
The school offers a full range of instructional services, such
as special education and enrichment programs.
Instruction is delivered in an inclusionary setting with
professional support personnel in all areas including reading,
speech/language, English as a Second Language, and guidance.
Other services include occupational therapy, physical therapy,
vision support, and hearing support.
The wide variety of social
and academic programs offered at Lower Gwynedd Elementary School mets
the needs of our diverse students.
Many students perform in musical and vocal concerts in the
winter and spring. Student
artwork is selected to be displayed in a district wide art show.
Students in grades 3 to 5 participate in the Continental Math
League, a national math contest.
The guidance counselor facilitates group meetings, conflict
resolution, and disability awareness day. Lower Gwynedd offers before
school tutoring for students who need extra support.
Field trips, assemblies, and visiting artists, are provided to
enrich and extend the curriculum. Lower
Gwynedd Elementary School encourages the involvement of the community,
parents, and Home & School association. Although only four years
old, our school has many activities and events that have already
become traditions. Each season offers another opportunity to encourage
and strengthen the bonds between school, family, and community.
Before school officially begins, students and parents are
invited to visit their new teacher and classroom.
Back to School Night,
held in early September, provides an opportunity for teachers to meet
parents and give an overview of the program.
The Fall Family Harvest Festival, Halloween Parade, Breakfast
with Buddies, American Education Week, and Book Fair are all events
that occur during the fall. During
the winter, Lower Gwynedd Elementary School hosts Books Alive, the
Holiday Shop, and Family Game Night.
A school-wide community service project called Gift From the
Heart allows students to help those less fortunate in the community.
Each year in March, after-school workshops are held and are run by
volunteers. The Lower Gwynedd Field Day, Roller Skating Party, Spring
Family Picnic, and 5th grade trip are special spring
events. The
building was designed to be accessible to the community. The
facilities at Lower Gwynedd Elementary School are used frequently by
Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Adult Basic Education Training, YMCA,
Wissahickon Wellness Committee, Whitpain Recreation Association and
Wissahickon Athletic Club.
